Documentary Style San Francisco Engagement Session | North Beach + Pier 7

North Beach, San Francisco Date Night Spot

If you’re going to take your engagement photos in San Francisco, you might as well make an evening of it. The sunsets truly show off in the Fall season.

That was the energy behind this engagement session for Clare and Michael. Instead of choosing a few pretty locations and asking these two to show up and pose, we went to the places they have enjoyed before. We started in North Beach at Cafe Zoetrope, wandered through the neighborhood, and let evening guide the photoshoot. There was no rigid shot list and no pressure to perform for the camera. Just the two of them moving through a place that already felt familiar. Their chemistry did the rest. The way they looked at each other, the way they naturally fell into step, the little laughs between locations, all of it became part of the story. That’s what I want a San Francisco engagement session to feel like. Less like a photoshoot and more like a romantic date night together.

Pier 7 Outlook Spot on the Waterfront

From North Beach, we made our way toward the waterfront near the Ferry Building and continued the adventure along the pier. Suddenly the city felt wide open. Brick streets and neighborhood corners gave way to the Bay, the skyline, the boats and all that beautiful San Francisco wind. It gave us room to move, which is one of my favorite things about photographing couples this way. We stopped when something caught our eye. I photographed the moments in between instead of constantly interrupting them to create something. The result is the kind of San Francisco engagement photography I love most: images that feel lived in, honest and unmistakably theirs.

I also brought my film camera along for the evening. Some sessions and stories just deserve to be remembered with a little more punch. Film has this beautiful way of holding onto the parts of a moment that digital photography can sometimes edit away. Like the Waymo cars that kept photobombing us. Looking back through these images, I feel like we captured more than what these two looked like while they were engaged. We captured what it felt like to be in this new season of life together.

If this is your engagement season, get in touch and we’ll plan the most fun San Francisco engagement session together.
