If you’ve been researching Cavallo Point as wedding venue, the photos simply don’t do it justice. As a Bay Area wedding photographer, I’ve had the privilege of shooting here many time.
Cavallo Point Lodge sits just north of the Golden Gate Bridge in Sausalito. It’s one of the most beloved luxury wedding venues in all of Northern California. More importantly, it’s become one of my absolute favorites to photograph. Here’s everything you need to know, plus a look at real moments I’ve captured here.
What Makes Cavallo Point Unique as a Wedding Venue

Cavallo Point sits on 45 acres within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, occupying a stretch of coastline with unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The property combines beautifully restored historic buildings with a collection of thoughtfully designed contemporary lodges that blend seamlessly into the hillside.
The result is a venue that feels entirely unlike anything else in the Bay Area. It’s refined without being stiff. It’s grand without feeling impersonal. Most importantly, it feels private even though you’re just minutes from San Francisco.
The atmosphere
The coastal air here carries something hard to describe. Soft, diffused bay light rolls across the property throughout the day. As a result, there’s a stillness that settles over every celebration. Ceremonies feel unhurried. Receptions feel intimate. Even on a full-scale wedding day, the property never feels crowded. Instead, it absorbs the celebration and makes everything feel effortless.
The views
Few venues anywhere in California offer the visual drama of Cavallo Point. The Golden Gate Bridge is not a distant silhouette here, it fills the frame. Whether you’re standing on the terrace during cocktail hour, walking the path between the lodges, or simply pausing during your portraits, the bridge is a constant, breathtaking presence. On clear days, the light on the water is extraordinary.
The accommodations
One of the features couples value most is the ability to host loved ones on-site. Historic cottages and contemporary hillside rooms together accommodate a meaningful portion of your guest list. As a result, the entire weekend feels like a true destination experience. And yet, no one has to travel far to get there.

The images throughout this post are from real weddings I’ve photographed at Cavallo Point. Every couple who chooses this venue brings something different to it: different light, different energy, different moments and the property has a way of rising to meet all of them.
Planning Your Cavallo Point Wedding: What to Know
Best times to book
Cavallo Point is stunning year-round. That said, the light in late spring and early fall is particularly special. May through October books quickly, so I’d recommend contacting the venue at least 12–18 months ahead for peak dates. Winter weddings, however, are deeply underrated. The moody bay, low golden light, and quieter atmosphere create something genuinely breathtaking.
Ceremony spaces
The venue offers several ceremony locations, from intimate garden settings on the Mission Blue Lawn to the Terrace with full bridge views. The lawn overlooking the water is the most photographed ceremony site, and for good reason the backdrop is simply unmatched. For couples seeking something more sheltered and architectural, the Mission Blue Chapel offers beautiful warmth and texture.
Food and dining
Don’t overlook The Farley, Cavallo Point’s on-site restaurant. The farm-to-table menu is genuinely exceptional among the best food you’ll find anywhere in Marin, hence the Michelin rating, and for multi-day celebrations, it’s the kind of gathering place that makes your guests feel truly taken care of. Many couples build a welcome dinner or farewell brunch into their weekend here – don’t skip out on the incredible cooking class; it’s a treat for all of your guests to enjoy time together and a meal that has been hand-made together.
Guest capacity
Cavallo Point accommodates intimate gatherings through larger celebrations of up to several hundred guests, depending on the spaces reserved. For couples seeking a more private, boutique experience, the venue also offers options for smaller ceremonies and elopements.

Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Cavallo Point
Every photographer has venues that just click for them — places where the light cooperates, the architecture leads, and the moments seem to rise on their own. Cavallo Point is that place for me.
The quality of light here is unlike anywhere else I shoot. The coastal diffusion softens everything beautifully, and at golden hour the bay turns a color I haven’t seen replicated anywhere else in the Bay Area. The historic buildings give texture and warmth to indoor portraits, while the grounds offer so much variety — open water views, sheltered garden paths, dramatic bridge backdrops — that no two sessions ever feel the same.
More than the aesthetics, though, I love how this venue makes couples feel. There’s a relaxed, unhurried quality to the day at Cavallo Point. People settle in. Guests linger over dinner. Couples actually get to be present for their wedding — and that, more than any backdrop, is what makes the photographs come alive.
