How to Plan a San Francisco City Hall Elopement: Secrets from a Wedding Photographer Who’s Been There, Shot That

Let’s be real—navigating San Francisco City Hall wedding rules and regulations, can be a bit like finding parking in San Francisco. Tricky, but super worth it in the end. The same goes for booking your San Francisco City Hall elopement at this truly iconic building. If you’re reading this, you’re probably just as excited as I am about saying “I do” in one of the most beautiful wedding venues in the Bay Area. As a wedding photographer who’s started capturing beautiful elopements here, I’m going to guide you on how to book your San Francisco City Hall elopement or micro wedding like a pro!

Step 1: Get the Date (and Time!) Right

First things first—securing your spot at City Hall. The earlier you book, the better your chances of getting that perfect wedding date. San Francisco City Hall slots fill up faster than you can say “elopement,” especially on Fridays and around major holidays. My pro tip? Consider a weekday morning. 8am right when it opens. Not only will you have more flexibility, but the light pouring through those grand windows is chef’s kiss for wedding photography. Plus, fewer people around means fewer photobombers in your dreamy shots.

You can book your elopement appointment at San Francisco City Hall both online and in person. For online bookings, visit the official San Francisco County Clerk’s website, where you’ll find the option to schedule your ceremony and obtain your marriage license. If you prefer to book in person, head to the Office of the County Clerk at City Hall during business hours. Just remember, appointments fill up quickly, so plan ahead to secure your perfect San Francisco wedding date.

Step 2: Nail the Paperwork

Here’s where things can get a little bureaucratic (but don’t worry, I’ve got your back). San Francisco City Hall marriage license requirements can seem like a momentous challenge, but it doesn’t have to be. Make sure you have all your documents ready—IDs, marriage license, and your patience. Trust me, you don’t want to be scrambling because you forgot that one vital piece of paper. And another tip: plan for extra time to get your marriage license. City Hall’s appointment slots can be tight, and there’s nothing romantic about running late on your wedding day.

Step 3: How to Choose a Ceremony Spot at San Francisco City Hall

San Francisco City Hall isn’t just any building—it’s an architectural masterpiece, perfect for stunning wedding photography. You get to choose from 1 hour, 2 hour or the evening wedding option. Within the building, you also have the option of choosing from three different ceremony spots, each offering a totally different vibe for your wedding.

The Rotunda: Grand and Iconic 10-Minute Ceremony Site
If you’ve ever scrolled through dreamy San Francisco City Hall wedding photos, you’ve probably seen the Rotunda. This space is the heart of City Hall, featuring a sweeping staircase, a towering dome, and marble floors that practically glow. The Rotunda is your go-to spot if you’re channeling that main character energy but prefer to keep things simple. It’s perfect for minimalist brides who want to focus on the essentials—just enough time to exchange vows, share a kiss, and capture a few stunning photos. But here’s the catch: you’ve got 10 minutes, folks. Short, sweet, and oh-so-suited for the bride who loves the beauty of simplicity.

The Mayor’s Balcony: Intimate Yet Impressive 1-Hour Ceremony Site
Looking for a spot that’s a bit more private but still has that wow factor? The Mayor’s Balcony is your answer. Nestled on the second floor, this location offers a stunning view of the Rotunda. It is framed by those iconic Corinthian columns. It’s an ideal choice if you’re planning a micro wedding—small, but not sacrificing an ounce of elegance. Plus, because it’s slightly off the main path, you’ll have fewer interruptions from passersby, giving you and your guests a more exclusive wedding experience.

The 4th Floor Galleries: Quiet, Private, and Oh-So-Romantic 1-Hour Ceremony Site
Now, if you’re dreaming of an elopement that feels like it’s just the two of you (and your wedding photographer), the 4th Floor Galleries are where you want to be. Tucked away on the top floor, these spots are lesser-known gems that offer privacy. The architecture up here is breathtaking.
Think high ceilings, soft light, and intricate details that make the perfect backdrop for your vows. There are two galleries to choose from, but my favorite is the North Gallery. It’s more secluded, with floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space in natural light. If you want your elopement to feel like a secret, magical moment, this is the spot.

Step 4: What to Wear for a San Francisco City Hall Elopement – Dress to Impress

San Francisco weather can be as unpredictable as that one guest who RSVP’d “maybe.” So, while you’ll want to look your absolute best, make sure your outfit is ready for anything. You may be hit with a a chilly fog or a burst of sunshine. Layers are your friend in SF. And speaking of friends, bring comfy shoes for those inevitable stair-climbing moments. Or we can just hop in the elevators, which is one of my favorite things to do.

Step 5: The Photo Ops (This Is Where I Come In!)

San Francisco City Hall is an absolute gem for wedding photos. Plus, you don’t have to limit yourself to just indoors! Take a quick stroll outside of the building, across the street or to some local bars or restaurants—Trust me, as a wedding photographer, I’ve got plenty of tips for capturing the best shots.
